Computer-Assisted Language Learning

S. Susan Marandi, Alzahra1 University

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is rapidly developing in many directions, making it increasingly difficult to write a coherent, comprehensive introduction to the topic. Not the least of the difficulties is the fact that technology itself is changing so swiftly as to often be overwhelming, and to “digital immigrants” (Prensky, 2001, ¶ 6) such as myself, at least, it sometimes seems as though we master a new technology with some difficulty, only to have it replaced by a newer, more intimidating if more intriguing one. In fact, trying to keep abreast of new developments in CALL is not unlike attempting to ride a bareback bronco; exhilarating and exciting, but only the very skilled can stay on top for long!
